GrC 452 Final Project Essay - 12/12/08

Overall, the blog posted on the GrC452 website makes complete sense. I agree wholeheartedly with the position that our professor has taken on the never-ending revolutionary technology that keeps changing. The one thing that I love about the major Graphic Communications is that it does encompass all things of how to communicate effectively in today’s world. Traditionally print has been the way, however with the invention of the Internet the traditional way is fading and becoming a mature market. I believe that print will never go away because something such as magazines is more appealing in print than on a screen. The beautiful colors captured by print of a fashion shoot or of the nature’s great outdoors is something that the Internet will not come close to. The tangible art being held in our hands makes beautiful printed pieces a part of technology that will never go away. I agree that with the changing world of technology that we as a major need to change with along with it. With students being graduated every year, we are expected to know the latest and greatest about our field of study and print is not the latest and greatest anymore.

The use of the Internet by more and more people has created a demand for companies to advertise and market themselves where they can be seen. Since, we as graphic communication experts are taught how to communicate effectively through technology how could we not be more knowledgeable in the world of the web? The transition from print to web needs to be established more in our major than ever before. The knowledge of web makes us as students that much more competitive when out in the job market. In my years at Cal Poly the demand for web designers has grown substantially. Almost being a graduate and looking for jobs, web designers and multimedia designer positions are more available now than graphic designers and prepress technicians. I noticed the web trend more last year and decided to take some extra classes on it to enhance my skills as our major offers very limited classes on web design, and those classes has proven very beneficial. Not only can I put graphic and print experienced on my resume but also my knowledge in web design will help increase my chance of finding a job.

I think a great idea would be to incorporate a web series similar to the 200 series in our program. Have one basic design class, a flash class, and an advanced web design class using both flash and skills from the first class incorporated. Those classes would offer students a good foundation of web knowledge to use when they get out into the real world. Another class that would be a good incorporation to the program is video editing. GrC 452 taught us how to use Final Cut Express to edit videos and create commercials. I believe graphic communications should incorporate everything including film editing. Imaging, print, packaging, web, and film graphically represented in our department. We would then as students become more able to market ourselves as well rounded people to potential employees.

Final Cut Express taught many of us who had no prior experience with film editing another way to market a brand. Not only did we learn how to edit and create film but also learned how to post them on the World Wide Web. An interesting fact about working with Final Cut is that although working with video and audio clips the class still at times used Photoshop, Illustrator, and Dreamweaver. The skills we had learned in previous GrC classes gave us an advantage to the program. We were able to import text files and manipulate image with skills learned from prior classes. Final Cut Express is not tied into the other Creative Suite programs, so the fact that students were able to pick up how to import Photoshop and Illustrator files directly into the program was fun and interesting to see. Everything that is taught and will be taught is directly fed of another. Through all my classes through the graphic communication major the closer one gets to graduation the more you see how each class feeds off another. The knowledge gained in the classroom makes us stronger students in others.

As a graphic communication student I feel as I have learned so much about printing technology that with technology changing so rapidly I am not able to contribute as much to the industry as I would want. I do not want this to sound negative because I learned a lot from my printing classes. However, one or two classes may be sufficient to gain the knowledge needed for industry. With the industry changing as rapidly as it is, many graduates will not go to work for print companies. Instead, graduates will be more interested to look for work in marketing agencies and branding agencies. These companies will offer them a wide variety of choices of what they want to do with the degree. They can make commercials, design ads or websites, or manage a print shop, whatever the outcome may be, the more the graphic communication major evolves the more the major can produce graduates that can really work for any company dealing with their graphic relations.

One of the best aspects about GrC 452 was web/classroom orientation in which the classroom was formatted. Our professor used the web to teach the students. Once taught the basics of each topic each week we were given the freedom to make what we wanted (within the limitations). I had never had a class that was so loose in what we could design. Without so many limitations many students, including myself got to really think outside the box on how to achieve the goals of our various projects. This quarter was a real learning experience for me because I learned something totally outside of my realm of thinking. I never thought I would learn how to make a commercial or edit a flash player. After taking this class it opened up the reality that there really is more to this major than just print. There is so many other forms of multimedia that can be taken advantage of and taught to the students in Graphic Communications making them that much more competitive when looking for employment after school.

In conclusion, Graphic Communications has such an exciting future ahead of it. The major will never die; it will keep evolving, as new technology will never stop being invented. Embrace the change, and welcome the new age of what could be the new Graphic Communications Major at Cal Poly.

Wi-Hire Ad- Updated 11/12/08

:::OBJECTIVES

The objective of this lab was to produce a ten second Wi-Hire flash ad that could potentially be used by the company on their website. The video had to be under ten seconds and include the Wi-Hire logo and motto: connect, inspire, succeed.

:::PROCEDURE

The procedure first started with being introduced to the owners of Wi-Hire who explained about their company and what it had to offer. After finding out the company background they told our class of the contest that was at hand. They were going to take a look at all of our flash ads and whosever one they most liked would recieve a gift card and on side note could also be a great portfolio piece. Once they left we were given a choice of whether to use flash or use FinalCut for our film editing. We were given all the graphics and told to have fun. I first took the logo and changed it form a .jpg to a .png so I could import it into Final Cut. Once I figured out how to do that I started playing with the layers of the original ad in Photoshop and proceeded to cut out words that I thought would be great to use in the commercial. Once I got all the graphics that I wanted to use I then set up my time frame for ten seconds and started to play with the idea that I wanted to use. I wanted the words of the motto to be the main gist of the commercial. I took each word making it its own frame and gave each word a certaine effect. For example the word succeed, seems to multiply and jump around while the inspire comes in from the right side of the screen. Once I had my frames and words where I wanted I added the logo at the end with a little repetition of the motto. I put music in and made it fade out once the ten seconds were over. I finished the video and then exported the file to my Vimeo account.

:::SUMMERY AND CONCLUSIONS

This lab showed me what I had learned all quarter. It was great to see all the work that I had put in this quarter pay off. I didn't have to ask to much questions and for the most part seemed pretty confident with the program that I was using. I thought it was great to work for a real life company and fit a job within their specifications. The specifications given to us were able to make it more real life than just another lab assignment. Also, the thought about being able to put the piece into our portfolio made me really go for it.

:::PROJECT SIGNIFICANCE

As I said last week this project signifies how far our class as come. With letting us for the most part have free range we got to test or abilities while making something worth keeping. I think the best part about this project was to see everybody's speciality. GrC has many creatives in it, and to be part of a class where each person can show off what they are most good in is great. I believe that each person bring something different to the table so it is definetly worthwhile to see each classmates project and ideas to help us in future projects. It is the best when we can learn from each other while also teaching ourselves at the same time.

:::CLOSING THOUGHTS

Overall, I liked this lab assignment the most out of them all. I think that working as individuals on this made it our own. This class has taught me a lot through the past quarter and as already stated it is great to see how far that knowledge has taken us in just seven weeks. This lab was a great middle of the quarter relief and made me just relax and have fun with the ideas that I was having. The fun that I had creating the ad makes it that much better.

Flash Player- Updated 10/30/08

:::OBJECTIVES

With help from our guest teacher we took a AT&T ad and made using Flash a ad ususally seen on the web featuring motion graphics.

:::PROCEDURE

The procedure first started with taking a still picture of the ad and using Photo Shop to take away the layers to save certain parts of the ad that we could later bring into Flash such as the learn more button. We then opened Flash and imported everything that we saved .jpgs and .pngs. We brought every single part of the ad in seperatley making each item there own layer. We were then introduced to the timeline found at the top of the Flash screen that allowed us to play with the motion timing of the graphics. After we brought in the backdrop we were then taught how to place text outside the ad box and have it fly in from the side. Using the tools much similar to Photo Shop and playing with the timeline we were able to take the bylines of the ad and bring them in from different sides of the ad box. We learned how to create a roll over button for the learn more button found on the ad by creating it into a symbol, which is where you can make the roll over effect. We learned how to create blank keyframes between each of the different layers so each item could be brought in a a different time. After all of this the class was then able to perform an ActionScript abling us to see our motion graphic ad before our eyes.

:::SUMMERY AND CONCLUSIONS

This lab taught me a lot about motion graphics that I had never known before. Having never really worked with Flash prior to this class our guest teacher taught us from the beginning levels the abilities that Flash was capable of doing. Using a big well known brand like AT&T made it that much better because it felt more real life. I like this lab because of the vast amount of knowledge and skill that I learned. From using most of the CS3 programs it is interesting to see all three used in Flash to create a motion web ad.

:::PROJECT SIGNIFICANCE

This project signifies how far our class as come. From many of the class Flash was not a well known program. But after using it for a couple weeks it is amazing to see how much we have learned. I feel that this lab helped me really understand the basic fundamentals of the Flash program and showed me that nothing is as easy as it looks. I liked being able to use real companies that are well known as it brings a sense of professionalism among the classroom.

:::CLOSING THOUGHTS

Overall, I thought these past couple weeks using Flash has been a great oppurtunity to learn a new skill. Not having any prior knowledge or skill in this program I can now say that I can for the most part create a web based ad using the Flash software. I liked having a guest teacher who actually worked in the business making it that much easier to listen to what he had to say, because he actually does it for aliving everyday. Having a real professional makes learning that much better because you really pay attention to what he is saying because he does know what he is talking about. Lastly, although at times this lab was somewhat confusing due to the lack of knowledge I had prior to or about Flash I can say that I have gained a lot of knowledge about this program and am glad I got to participate.

Flash Player- Updated 08/24/08

:::OBJECTIVES

The objectives of this project were to use our I-Pod video commercial made in lab last week and convert it into a flash video player using the flash program and instruction from a guest speaker.

:::PROCEDURE

With instruction from our guest speaker. We first took our I-Pod commercial and converted the size making it a smaller video to play with. We started Flash and were intially shown how to create flash player skins with pre-done ones. However, that was not our objective of this project. We learned from scratch how to make a flash player not using any of the default settings. We selected our skin from a huge lists and then were allowed to change the colors using the tools in Flash that are somewhat similar to Photoshop tools, but with some differences. We were then taught how to make the individual play, stop, seek bar buttons and put them on our skin. With the buttons we were taught how to change the layers around so that they symbol on the button showed while changing the colors to our preferences. We then made branding marks to put on the side of our video also making each separate item there own layer. We then made actions, similar to those in Photoshop and applied them to our video. We then converted the video to .swf and html and using Transmit was able to upload the html code to our website and upload our video.

:::SUMMERY AND CONCLUSIONS

Overall I thought this lab was good, it went very slow but that was a good thing. The slowness allowed others including myself to figure out what exactly we were doing and how the actions made sense. I liked how we got to use a project that we made and see how a feature as simple as a flash player is not as easy as it seem. Shows how much we as frequent Internet users take advantage of the easy use of the functions of the internet.

:::PROJECT SIGNIFICANCE

As far as project significance goes I think that this project allowed us to use flash in a good way. To start us off many of us never having used flash and applying it to a flash player was a good way to start us off. We were able to see what Flash does and use it in a way that we see everyday on the Internet. Although, I used my un-edited I-Pod video, realizing at the end what I was doing I still gained a lot of experience and was able to take my real edited video and apply the flash effects to that one. That just goes to show that what I was taught stuck with me and that it was not hard to figure it out I just had to be shown the steps.

:::CLOSING THOUGHTS

This lab was really fun and made me come to appreciate all the web designers out there. When looking at a simple flash player like the one we designed in lab it does not look like that much work, but in reality it took us three hours to do one little aspect of a website. This lab showed me what Flash has to offer and though at sometimes it was frustrating if our video did not upload correctly, we found that after looking at our code and our actions and to make sure that everything was correct such as spelling and case sensitive letters, we were able to produce something that we see in real life. This lab gave me a sense of professionalism after I was done because of what I created. Although it was small it is something that I know I would use in real life and that people like me use everyday.
